Kuva Space welcomes Ioannis Malounas as Director of Product

By Kuva Space

We're excited to welcome Ioannis Malounas to Kuva Space as our new Director of Product. Ioannis brings deep expertise at the intersection of sensors, AI models, and hyperspectral imaging, with a career spanning from agtech startups and academic research to global machinery leaders like Kubota.

Ioannis holds a PhD in hyperspectral imaging and has worked on EU and nationally funded projects in AI and agricultural automation. Along the way, he was one of the founding members of EdenCore, an AI computer vision agtech company, where he spent four years as COO, before moving into the corporate world at Kubota to help transform machinery into autonomy-ready solutions and develop digital solutions that use sensors and data to improve machine performance and customer profitability.

Joining Kuva Space brings together two long-standing passions: space and hyperspectral imaging. As Ioannis points out, hyperspectral companies are rare, and hyperspectral satellite companies rarer still. Kuva Space, sitting at the intersection of both, was a natural draw. He was also amazed by the range of different verticals Kuva Space operates in, which creates what he calls "an extremely interesting problem for a product person to solve: how do you build solutions for customers with completely different needs?"

Most Earth observation data can tell you that something changed. Hyperspectral imaging can tell you what changed, and possibly even why. That capability closes the gap between an observation and an informed decision.

For Ioannis, the unique power of hyperspectral imaging lies in its ability to explain, not just detect:

"Most Earth observation data can tell you that something changed. Hyperspectral imaging can tell you what changed, and possibly even why. That capability closes the gap between an observation and an informed decision."

That belief shapes how Ioannis approaches building products. For him, it always starts with the decision a customer is trying to make. The real question, he says, is not what can be measured, but what decision is being made badly today, or not being made at all, and what value hyperspectral data can add. He's equally clear-eyed about the discipline this requires: products are built on hypotheses, and when one falls short, the team must be ready to pivot. Above all, he wants to build products that earn customers' trust through reproducibility and validation across a wide range of operational conditions.

At Kuva Space, I want to build solutions that don't add to this complexity but instead provide the right information when it's needed. Information users trust to act on, whether they're a farmer, a port authority, or an environmental agency. My goal is to make hyperspectral data part of everyday decision-making.

Ultimately, Ioannis sees a bigger goal behind the products he’ll build at Kuva Space: cutting through the noise of a data-saturated world. He offers a simple analogy. Where our grandparents once made decisions with very little information, today we face the opposite challenge. We have too much information, and we're drowning in it, which has made decision-making harder.
